JAM Toolbox

The best class you will have is one that you are prepared for! This involves practicing routines, cueing, music selection and knowing your audience. Plan in advance and be ready for modifications! You may have the most amazing playlist and notice that no one is able to follow any of the routines, or, adversely, the routines are too easy! As an instructor, read the room at all times, from the moment they walk in, to the time they look like they need a water break! These are prime moments when you can adjust your playlist. You have a toolbox of songs to work from! Know which songs will be better for EVERY class!

Think or your warm up song as your first impression. If someone is walking into your class for the first time, this is where you want them to think "YESSS!! This is what I've been looking for!!" Warmup choreo should begin with head (neck rolls), continue to arms, move to hips, and then full stretching. Between each section of the body, incorporate increasing the heart rate gradually.

Your warmup should be:

  • High Energy

  • Easy to Follow

  • Have a Fun Chorus

  • Have Repeatable Moves in Any Song!

You have the choreo. You have the playlists. You have the venue. The next important step to a successful class is cueing your students.

Think of yourself like the lead in a dance video game. If your student doesn't know what move is about to happen, they are going to get lost and possibly frustrated. This is why cueing is super important in your teaching process. You can cue in so many different ways: verbally, physically or even subliminally! The key is to look for breaks in the music where you have the chance to either call out upcoming moves or signals. Your students will learn what each motion and call out means with time, or you can tell them ahead of time! And remember, cueing takes practice!

While many think that our playlists are thrown together randomly, little do they know that there is actually a method to the JAM madness! Here is the general class formula:

Warmup (3-5 Minutes)
Easy Routine 1 (3-4 Minutes)
Easy Routine 2 (3-4 Minutes)
High Cardio Routine (3-4 Minutes)
Latin Routine (Medium to High Impact) (3-4 Minutes)
High Cardio Routine (HARD) (3-4 Minutes)
30 Minute Mark - WATER BREAK (4 Minutes)
New Routine - Teaching Break (5 Minutes)
New Routine Run Through (3-4 Minutes)
Well known fun routine (3-4 Minutes)
Optional - 2 Minute Routine if class is going fast
Hard Routine - high impact (3-4 Minutes)
Latin Routine (Medium to High Impact)
Medium to Slow Routine (3-4 Minutes)
Cool Down Routine (3-4 Minutes

JAM Routines differ from other cardio dance formats in that they are formatted similar to a song, meaning there is choreo to the verses, the chorus, and the bridge. Each piece of the song will repeat its corresponding choreography. The easiest way to choreograph a JAM song is to read the lyric sheet! Figure out what your song parts are and start there!

Another tip for choreographing a JAM routine is to simply COUNT the music. Count how many 8 counts make up each verse section or each chorus. You will be surprised how many breaks you find in the same song parts and how you need to modify choreo for the same song!

As a JAM Instructor, it's your job to not only teach, cue, and set the stage, but also engage your class. An instructor who only interacts with themselves in the mirror makes for a lonely audience! Make it a point to introduce yourself to new students, remember their names, call them out when they get the steps, high five them when they stand out, and even dance along side them if they seem lost! Those small details pay dividends as you build those long lasting clients who look for praise weekly in your class!

Similarly to engaging your class is building your dance community, or as we call it, the JAMily! The JAMily is what brings your clients BACK! Building this community is essential in having a successfull following. There are many ways to do this! You can:

  • Build a Facebook or Instagram group

  • Reach out to local retailers to host free JAM classes

  • Host free JAM outings, parties, happy hours or classes

  • Create class culture by celebrating birthdays, taking weekly pictures, videos, and hosting theme days!
